The thing is, Wesker's resurrection never amounted to anything more than shock value, and RE5 really hammers this home. It would be different if they had actually planned out what they were going to do with Wesker ahead of time once they revived him, but it's pretty obvious they never thought that far into the future. I mean, heck, what little they did have him accomplish since his resurrection was scrapped entirely with RE5.
I think they really only brought him back as a means of prolonging the series past Umbrella. They knew they'd eventually have to move on from Umbrella, and what better way to do that than to introduce (or reintroduce, rather) another antagonist to the series independent of Umbrella's activities. They basically did it again with Tricell.
I gave up on the series storyline after re2 the series took a dive with re3 and it's carried on since with recycled ideas that didn't make into the past game.
For the next game I want to able to play the game as a antagonist so we can see the storyline from there standpoint cutscenes and notes aren't enough imo, Wesker, Hunk, Ada should of had their own games.

I really hope that never happens.
RE never was, and never should be about the storyline.
Then why are u even following the series? what for better gameplay in each new installment? the series had a brilliant storyline starting point with re1 & re2 "wesker" / "irons" it didn't stop the gameplay progressing either the storylines in the newer games have been pathetic and when did I once say that they shouldn't try to improve the gameplay mechanics with every game? what's stopping them making a game with a brilliant storyline, gameplay and controls apart from capcom's lazyness?

I would be happy if RE had a brilliant story gameplay and controls too.
But my opinion is that capcom are horrible story writers.
Ive never really followed the series for it's storyline, Ive always played the RE games for their gameplay and incredible atmosphere. And I always play game for myself, so I played RE5 to see if it was any good.
My favorites have been RE3, Remake and Outbreak 2. Remake probably has the best told story in the series, but it's hardly ground breaking. Especially when compared to other games. But I do love the gameplay in the classics, that's why those 3 are my favorites.
If RE gets a reboot, with a new story and new gameplay and new characters. It's just gonna be a completely new game but with the same name. I don't think I could be bothered with it.
I don't know why so many people rate re3 dino crisis 2 had much better gameplay imo being able to run and shoot with guns the hole in the wall save system which is similar to what 1.5 had with the computer, the dodge mechanic makes the game too easy though.
Re3 is nothing than Mr. x on acid constantly chasing you with reused ideas that didn't make it into re2 the story didn't really progress other than knowing that Barry is still alive it looks like a re2 mod with all the reused rooms.
imo re3 was rushed out to give playstation fans something to play they didn't even care if it was any good or not as code veronica was just around the corner anyway.

While Code Veronica was obviously more important to them, I think it's unfair to say that Capcom didn't care about RE3 or diminishing RE3 altogether. Like it or not, RE3 introduced more new gameplay elements than CV which was basically RE2 gameplay thrown into 3d environment.

Well, because Dino Crisis 2 is not part of the RE series I guess.
Ive never played Dino Crisis 2 but I'm about to get it of Ebay soon cause I liked the first game a lot.
I think Dino Crisis needed run and gun though because of the dinosaurs and the fact they could run fast and you needed to backpedal a lot.
I loved RE3, It's my favorite game ever, I don't think RE needs a run and gun feature.
Also I don't think RE3 was made out of scrapped RE2 elements. I know Nemesis was, but he's way better than Mr.X anyway. I think Mr.X suits RE2 better though, maybe they wanted to save Nemmy for a bigger role later.
As Ive said numerous times, I don't care about RE's storyline, the lack of a intricate plotline only made RE3 all the more cool IMO. I liked how it was very focused on gameplay, and relatively simple in terms of story. I liked RE3's storyline anyway, it was simple yet fun.
I liked RE3 a lot better than CVX. I did like CVX's plot but it got in the way a lot and caused more problems than it did good.
So Wesker leading the S.T.A.R.S into the mansion, faking his own death starting the whole saga doesn't count as a storyline?,
Iron's being a complete arsehole rapist in re2, Birkin, Annette, Sherry, Ada etc did you have the sound turned off whilst playing and skipped all the little notes?
John Ada Mole ;-) John = Ada's boyfriend, Ada Mole = Ada the spy.
A game doesn't have to have brilliant gameplay to be engrossing go play OverBlood the gameplay is atrocious but you can't help but play it to see the final out come if only they'd made this an official Barry Burton game lol, Razz ftw.

Ugh. I know it has a story, just not a very good one. Well it's ok but not good enough for me to ride the game just for story alone. I play because I like the gameplay. It doesn't really matter to me if it has a good story or not. If it has a good story it's usually a plus though.
I mean, do people watch the Simpsons of Family Guy for the story of each episode? I don't think so, they watch it for the jokes but the story is ok anyway.
I mean can you compare RE story to MGS or SW:KOTOR? Those games have a terrific story.
BTW. Anyone knows if Thomas Wilde is going to update his Plot Analysis now that RE5 was released?
The back story of RE is tremendously good. I do love the files you find and read and things like that. But the main story in each game is usually nothing to wait 4 years over.
I don't play games for the back story.
EDIT: Id just like to say I did enjoy the story of the demise of Raccoon City and the outbreak at the Arklay regions a lot. But after that I didn't really care what happened. Story just got in the way for me after that.
So have you played OverBlood? I bet you can't be because you rely too heavily on decent gameplay.
How can you say the main in-game story of the past games aren't very good then say "The back story of RE is tremendously good." there the same thing.

I have never played Overblood I admit. I can play a game with bad gameplay, but it generally takes me a while to complete, and I don't really have much of an urge to go and play it. And when I do finish it a rarely ever play it again. it took me a long time to finish Fatal Frame, I just could get into the gameplay even though I liked the story and thought it was very scary. I just never had the urge to play it like I do with Outbreak for example, I get the urge to play that all the time.
Also back story and main story are different things. If your friend goes what is this game about, you tell them what happens in the game (usually without spoilers if your considerate). You don't usually go and explain the back story of the game do you.
If someone where to come up to me and ask me what RE is about, I would say it's a Horror game where you play as a character trying to escape a place filled with zombies, and you have to use your brain to help you survive. If they are still interested and want to know about the story. I say in the first game Jill and Chris are lured into the mansion and have to escape, in the second game Claire is looking for her lost brother, and in RE3 Jill has to escape the city as she is chased by a huge monster.
