  • X-Play's Biggest Disappointments of 2009: Resident Evil 5 and Bionic Commando

Despite the sales numbers and the relatively positive, for the most part, review scores, it seems unlikely that Resident Evil 5 will be taking home any "Game of the Year" awards or making it onto any "Best of" lists. It has, however, found a place alongside Bionic Commando on X-Play's "Biggest Disappointments of 2009" segment.

Whether you agree or disagree with their choices, to hear what they have to say, follow this link.

    *UPDATE*

And speaking of disappointments, IGN has posted its review of Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil 0, awarding the title a less than favorable 4.5 out of 10.

    Thats fuckin' bullshit.

Sure RE5 was a little disappointing compared to it's marketing, what it had promised etc(i.e. RE5 in 2007), but it's not a disappointment stand-alone.

    Lame review/judgement. Next.

(And damn IGN shot down RE0 with that review there).

I absolutely agree that RE5 was a massive disappointment. I'm thinking it could even nearly be most disappointing game of the decade.

I think that RE0 mark is quite fair too. When you've got $30 and you can get RE0 or a much more recent game (say RE4 or Dead Space), it's hard to recommend RE0. Interestingly, I looked up the IGN review of the Wii REmake re-release. They gave that 8/10. They said the controls were never great, but didn't punish it like they did in their RE0 review. They were reviewed by two different reviewers. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Wow, that is the reason X-Play is as irrelevant as it is these days. Seriously, there RE5 review, and the reasons they give for bashing RE5 are just plain retarded. OMG, it didn't play like GOW. So what? It's still a damn fine game. As one youtube commenter said down in teh video, it just shows how some gamers are so spoiled by game mechanics these days, because EVERYTHING just has to play like EVERYTHING ELSE these days to be considered "good". What the hell happened to different games with different control schemes and types? What happened to the good ole days when games could be diverse and apperciated for it, instead of hounded for not going along with the crowd. Hell, RE5's predecessor set this next-gen's tone for action games in general in which Gears of War modified, along with a couple other games. Re5 still has a great foundation built upon it to qualify as being considered a very good game.

Mentioning RE5 and Cock Commando in the same breath is simply wrong. . .very, very wrong.

No wonder...I just read the whole thing by this douche of a reviewer. It seems
this is like his first time playing/reviewing a RE game. I don't want to see that
guy reviewing the PSN re-release of 2 & 3 if they ever do, I see like 2.5 for each.

Matt Casamassina who reviewed Archives: REmake did a so much better job at it
and gave it an 8.0 and that is to say that RE0 & REmake aren't so different.

They should at least be consistent with their reviewers for each franchise/genre.
Matt Casamassina was actually the one who reviewed the GC originals so many
years ago so he should have been the one to do it just instead Ryan Clements.

Yet another failure to rate an old classic game for what it is by mainstream reviewers....

Which is really why RE5 has no excuses. It pissed away a massive opportunity to be something truly awesome. Nay, some would say, it was a disappointment. RE4 was superceeded in the years between 2005 and 2009. I think even mechanically RE4 works better than RE5. With the inventory, weapon upgrades (Stocks and scopes), treasure combining, not shitty AI to contend with, and no shitty 2 player gimmicks.

Personally I'd go further than to say that RE5 was a disappointment, I'd say it is a bad game. However the impression I got from the video is that they were saying it was good, but no where near as good as they expected it to be.

I agree with you on that. I forgot to comment on IGN's review score. RE0 is FAR from my favorite RE, but it's rather silly to re-reate a port so low, when it's a port, and not meant to be anything other. But that's what game reviewers usually do. I remember EGM giving pretty low scores to the gamecube releases of RE2 and RE3 because of them being strictly ports, and the 40.00 price tag, which, I think is a far criticism. But yeah, kinda silly to grade a port of a very old game so low. It'd make sense to dock points for a port being broken or something compared to the oriignal, but since Re0 is pretty much RE0 for the gamecube--the game can't be any worse than the cube version, and the rating it originally received.

It obvioulsy comes to down to reviewer preference.

Oh, don't get me wrong. RE5 certainly didn't lift up to it's namesake like it could and should have. But it's still a pretty fun game overall. It's certainly not RE4 breaking new ground material, nor game of the year. But when it came out, all you heard was all this bitching and moaning about the controls, about how it didn't control like Gears or Call of Duty, etc, etc. There's no fucking problem with RE5's controls. They work, and they're reponsive. It's just the rather nonsensical belly-aching by some people about the game that irrates me. (Not that a person doesn't like the game). The racial issue was another annoying criticism, and X-Play lowered themselves into that fray as well in their review. Just complete bullshit.

Though, yeah, RE5 could, and should have been better. I guess it's just no one at Capcom could fill Mikami's shoes unfortunately. But sometimes, I think people complain, wihtout appericating the good things about a game, and RE5 is still a mostly well made game. Not on the level of RE4's well constructed, balanced, and polished campagin. But that's another story.

I really don't listen to what a reviewer says because everything they think sucks with a game is their own opinion.I always use the old saying"I'll be the judge"because I want to make sure that a game has what I like in it and not go by what someone else says. Some might like REzero and someone else might not.you can't satisfy everyone. It's impossible.Ya gonna have lovers and haters.thats the way the world works now.

I dont thin RE5 should be on the list but I will 110% agree that BC should be on there. Fuck.That.Stupid.Game.

                        I have to disagree.

Sure the storyline was a bit disappointing but the game played smoothly and the controls were only a slightly varied version of the RE4's. And even then there is still a lot of extra content in the game to enjoy.

Disappointing game of the decade? I think thats exaggerating things.

Now Kingdom Hearts is disappointing. That series is hyped up the ass. I played that game and CHRIST, shitty repetitive gameplay, looping crappy background music that will haunt you until you die, lackluster story. BAH.

I'll let MC Chris explain in even more detail: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZsDUSxK5Fs

Ok what the hell was that? Do these people get paid for what they do? His reason's for disliking Res5 was....Bluuurrrgghhhhh!!! You know he make's a good point. What a twat.

Who the hell are these people anyway? Never heard of the the show and hopefully this will be the last I ever hear of them.

Also it's funny how Res4 is like a classic to some people now and just after that came out people where naming it the worst Res game ever. Give it a few years and people will be saying Res5 was a classic.

In my opinion Res5 is a much better game than Res4.

Uncharted2 and Res5 are my game's of the year and I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm not going to let some weird ugly ass creepy guy who makes vomit noises spoil that for me.

Edit: I also have spent a ton of time on this game. I am up to 190 hours total gameplay time. I have completed the game around 10 times and spent the rest on Merc's and Versus. Also I just want to say that most of my mates have bought or have played Res5 and they ALL enjoyed it. The first time I heard anything bad about this game was right here at THIA. So it look's like GOTY will probably go to COD :-( A game that I completed in 3 hours and haven't touched since.

I didn't yet get bored : ) I am still playing with my friends

I think RE5 could be better, and if someone call it a disappointment I will understand.
                              .
But call it the biggest disappointment of the year? I think it's way to much.
