  • Latest Sales Figure For Resident Evil Games

Capcom have just posted their financial results for the 9 months ended December 31, 2009. Here are the latest overall sales result for the Resident Evil games:

    Resident Evil 5 (PS3/360) - 5.3 million
    Resident Evil 2 (PS) - 4.96 million
Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (PS) - 3.5 million
Resident Evil (PS) - 2.75 million
    Resident Evil 4 (PS2) - 2.2 million
Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition (Wii) - 1.6 million
    Resident Evil 4 (GC) - 1.6 million
    Resident Evil Outbreak (PS2) - 1.45 million
    Resident Evil Code: Veronica X (PS2) - 1.4 million
Resident Evil (GC) - 1.35 million
    Resident Evil 0 (GC) - 1.25 million
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles (Wii) - 1.2 million
Resident Evil Director's Cut Dual Shock Edition (PS) - 1.2 million
Resident Evil Code: Veronica (DC) - 1.14 million
Resident Evil Director's Cut (PS) - 1.13 million

The numbers remains the same compared to the numbers recorded at last year March, except RE4 PS2 which received a bump of 0.1 million, while RE5 increased by 0.3 million.

The overall numbers for RE4 on the home consoles is 5.4 million, just a little above RE5's 5.3 million. While both numbers doesn't include the PC versions, RE5 should surpass RE4 with ease soon with the release of the Gold/Alternative Edition.

Out of interest, what about RE2 and 3's sales on the Dreamcast amd GC? Wonder if RE2 would top the chart then.

Out of interest, why do Capcom not include PC sales of their games?
I can understand why there's no PC version of RE1-4 there, because they weren't published by Capcom (if memory serves well, RE1 & RE2 were published by Virgin Interactive, RE3 by Eidos and RE4 by Ubisoft), but all current-gen games were published by Capcom.

EDIT: Just noticed that this is just a list of games that sold more than 1mln copies. So that may answer my question.

Capcom should be splitting the PS3 and 360 RE5 sales on that list. Same with DMC4 and SFIV. Just because they all released day and date, doesn't mean they should count as a total together.

Everything else is platform specific of 1 million+ sales so why are they not doing it for these titles neglects the point of the list to begin with when everything else is not totaled on title release.

As pointed out, if there was combined sales for that title across multiple platforms RE4 would be up there. As would the original Resident Evil in it's 3 PS iterations (plus a small amount of Saturn). And Resident Evil 2 would probably have the most amount of sales of all in the series (around 6 million I'd say once you accounted for PS DS re-release, DC, N64, and GC - all small amounts but I'd say around 1 million units between all those released worldwide when added to the 4.96 million of the first PS title).

I don't know if it's a good thing that it sold so well...

Not much movement in the leader board since last time...

I say this every time Capcom releases this list but I may as well say it again. By combining the different versions and formats of the same game, you get a much more accurate indication of their popularity and sales numbers.
It's interesting to include the different versions as additional information (to break down how the total was achieved) but just having the different console versions and Dual Shock versions etc. as separate entities is kinda misleading.

I'm also very curious to know the total number of downloads of the games on the PSN stores. In today's market, I don't see why these figures should not also be included.
I "Asked Capcom" about these download numbers but they wouldn't tell me.
We do have those numbers (though I don't personally have them handy). Unfortunately I believe they fall into what we would call "proprietary info" which is the kind of stuff we don't share publicly, for fear of somehow giving our competition extra info.

                        best,
                        Seth

I agree the list can be inconsistent and a bit unreliable at times. But actually, I'm 95% sure RE4 is the highest selling in the series ever. Capcom's figures don't include stuff like the Resident Evil Essentials package, which adds a substantial amount to the three games it bundles. We know from Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G that Capcom does not include Japanese budget versions in their calculations, but around 25% of Biohazard 4's PS2 sales come from budget SKUs.

Although I can't divulge exact NPD numbers, I can say that RE4 PS2 is actually not far south of 2 Million units in the US alone, which obviously means RE4 can't only be at 2.2 Million since the PS2 port also sold nearly 700K in Japan combining SKUs and then Europe comes into play.

To be fair to RE2, we don't have PSN figures.

I think the general deal is "Same day - Same product - Same Budget"

I'm kinda surprised to see the high numbers of both Director's Cut and Director's Cut - Dual Shock, though. (Also wonder how long it'll take before Darkside Chronicles hits the million mark)

I guess Outbreak File 2 didn't sell to well, thought the game had good improvements over the fist Outbreak.
