  • The Origins of "Desperate Escape"

Capcom Unity via the Director's Blog explains the origin story for "Desperate Escape". Apparently Josh Stone was originally slated to die at the end of the refinery section in RE5 but was kept alive because of the co-op gameplay which disallowed Sheva to remain in the boat alone afterwards. It's an interesting little blurb. Read the full thing at the link below.

Desperate Escape's Origins, thanks to aris13.

There are similar other entries that can be read on Capcom Unity as well, they also feature small blurbs on interesting subjects.

    Ties to Resident Evil 1
    Origins of "Lost in Nightmares"

Thumbs up Xfactor for pointing these out.

A round of applause to Josh for not being an intermediate between a MIIIIIIIIIIIIIKE or a LUUUUUUUUUIIIIIIIIS!!!!!!

Desperate Escape and the mercs reunion is a good send-off for the character.

The original story sounds like it was a good one; I have to say that Josh isn't that bad of character (becuase he helped Jill, and Chris and Sheva)

^ How does having Josh die make it a better story?

Wow. I love how the director of RE5 talks in "when we decided" this or "when this was decided" instead of saying "When I decided this, or I decided that." That's some real leadership on display there. Guess it proves further to the theory that the director of RE5 was just more or less doing a job than actually spearheading Re5 directly with his own heart and spirit. I remember always thinking when Takechuki(crap, don't know how to spell it) was doing an interview for the game, where is the director of the game? Not once did we ever see him in the public to talk about the game. And if he did, he sure as hell didn't do it at any major outlet. This is what happens when the head of the RE chicken is cut off. When Mikami left, it just goes to show you no one really could fill his shoes for RE5.

I don't mean to sound like I"m flaming the poor guy, but this one quote has me shaking my head at how misguided he seems.

Now that the game was centered around co-op, it would have been odd if one player switched from playing Sheva to Jill in the middle of the game. That was the reason why Jill didn’t appear as a playable character in the original game.
Are you kidding me? I mean, really, are you kidding me? It would have been "weird" to play to play as a fan-favorite character for a flashback senario, one in which, would have made many RE fans jizz in their pants over playing in a creepy variation of the original mansion that started it all? Not to mention narratively, wouldn't it have been so much more shocking to get to actually go through Lost in Nightmares and, oh, I don't know, FIGHT Wesker, instead of just *telling us* what happens in a cheap cutscene? Shouldn't it have been a better decision for the players to experience it themselves?

                I call bullshit on that.

But, we had a lot of “Jill fans” on the development team and they constantly laid stress on featuring Jill as a playable character.
I'm surprised no one has posted this quote. It's kind of funny. Capcom's own development team is full of Jill Illumanados! Run everyone!!!!

LOL... Even Mikami confessed Jill Valentine was his favorite character in the series.

So, there's no only a Jill fanbase... the development team is in our boat aswell!

Mikami's favourite character is Ada Wong...

valentinesdead?: Takeuchi is the director of Biohazard 5, not of the new content (he's supervisor). And Zero means that the cutscenes for these 2 new scenarios were going to be comic style if included in the original version but decided against it 'cause it wouldn't feel right compared to the big budget mo-cap ones.

He changed his favorite RE character again? First it was Jill, then Leon, now Ada. Seems like the man can't make up his mind.

Takeuchi was never the director. He was the main producer, but I don't ever recall him being labeled as the director. I remember in an interview he mentioned their being an "RE5 director." Also, to quote the "ties to resident evil" aritcle. ..

I am Anpo, the director of the additional content being released for Resident Evil 5. I was also director on the full version of Resident Evil 5.
Uh, unless that's a tranlastion error, let me go back to my video recordings of RE5's credicts to double check here. . .and Takeuchi is credicted as producer. Strangely, there's no director credict in the credicts. . .

But as far as the comic strips for the flashback stuff, that seems rather backwards ass planning on there part if the Lost in Nightmares senarino was apart of the "original" plan. Not to mention the flashback scene in RE5 IS motion-captured, but eh, Capcom's weird, so I guess there's no real way to explain that, unless the "comic-like" scenes were meant to be a stylistic touch or something.

My bad, you're right, Takeuchi was the producer. Kenichi Ueda and Anpo-san were the director's for the original...

They made the cutscenes for the new content after the game was released (remember that Patricia Ja Lee interview), not during development. The scenarios were just ideas at the time RE5 was being developed but only after the release they actually started working on them.
