  • Keiji Inafune: Resident Evil Revelations and 3DS Interview

Nintendo has put up an interview Capcom's Keiji Inafune, where he talks about the new 3DS and Resident Evil Revelations.

Nintendo E3 Network - Developer Interview: Keiji Inafune Interview

Prime Blue posted a transcript of the interview over on NeoGAF, hopefully he wont mind if we copy 'n' paste it here (and the collective E3 Wraths of Capcom and Nintendo wont haunt us):

    Capcom Managing Corporate Officer
Global Head of Research & Development

"Hi, I'm Keiji Inafune, I lead game development here at Capcom.

When Nintendo first told me about the Nintendo 3DS and its 3D screen I was really surprised. I was waiting for a system with such powerful processing ability. It is very attractive. Capcom games tend to eat up a lot of machine power, including graphics. Everyone at Capcom wants to make games with the best graphics. The Nintendo 3DS can help make that happen.

That feature, which may not sound fancy, is what I'm most excited about when I tested the hardware. We want to make great games to not put the hardware to shame, so please look forward to it.

The Resident Evil series, I want people to play it on the Nintendo 3DS. This will be a complete original. As a game, it will make you want to explore all sorts of secrets. I think 3D images make players wonder what's at the end of the hallway or what's behind the furniture. We're making it so it's really like watching a movie in 3D, so it's very engaging. Zombie hordes will come at you with more behind it, and when you see that it will make you think you have to shoot faster. By the game being in 3D, it can bring more fun and excitement to the players.

We've been making several Resident Evil games, but this one will be the real thing. It will be a complete original, similar to Resident Evil 5. I hope you'll take a look at the show floor.

It's not out on E3, but we're also working on Super Street Fighter 4 for the Nintendo 3DS. It's a game that's made for 2D, but I really like the way those 2D elements appear in 3D. I like it a lot."

I'm still wondering do I want to own this title. Only because it would mean purchasing an entirely new handheld console for one Resident Evil game (so far). I cannot wait to see the 3D effects too.

I guess capcom has lost it, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to see that Inafunes statement contradicts itself.

Its like saying; "it will be a complete original, similar to the Anderson movies"

I just hope this game finally has real zombies, unlike how many people including game magazines called the ganados/majini "zombies".

            He did mention zombies.

And the "it will be a complete original, similar to resident evil 5" doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what he meant to say. He meant to say that it will be a new entry in the (main) series.

Well...at least an origional side story rather than a Chronicles. That does leave it anywhere between Gun Survivor quality and main game good.

Zombies... Like Resident Evil 5? If by that he means RE4/5 gameplay with actual brain eating zombies I'm in. Glad to see Inafune heading a Resident Evil game.

Resident Evil 5 was not/is not a complete original. His statement in that regards is completely idiotic. He is very confused.

I think some are taking "original" out of context. He means it in the sense that the story/plot will fit in with the other main titles and not be a spinoff. Ultimately meaning, that all of the events in this game will be canon.

Inafune's pretty much overseeing everything at Capcom now, both internal and external. He's the man in charge of adding and ensuring their so called "Capcom flavor" to everything being published by the company.

He wasn't talking about the gameplay. If you're going there with his quote, then just about every RE game that came after the first wasn't an "original". Should we dismiss those games that came after RE1 because they weren't completely original?

Why is Pikminister quoting me? Was he/she/it trying to rebuttal me? If so, I don't see their retort as a rebuttal at all.

Edit: My statement stands that RE5 was not "original". Either in terms of gameplay or story. To me it was a GoW copy.

Depends on your definition of what makes a Resident Evil game original. I would enjoy reading what other people perceive as "original" when it comes to the series.
