Rumor: New Resident Evil to be announced at VGA?

Yeah we knew about that since 2004 when he was on his way out. But he is still considered the father of the RE series and his influence is still strong.

Fact is, the guy keeps getting asked RE questions by the press. And you can still see that he has some influence despite not working at Capcom. For instance, when asked about RE5 he said that it was basically a copy of RE4 and that it was fine. But he expected things to go differently with RE6:

Mikami:...but Resident Evil 6 will have to reinvent the series with another full model change or else it won't be able to keep on going."

Shinji made that comment in late 2008.

Now here's the thing: Early the next year, Jun Takeuchi was asked by 1up.com about Mikami's comments and the site reported that "Resident Evil 5 is practically guaranteed to be the last of its kind, with the game's producer, Jun Takeuchi, assuring us that a reboot is in order for the inevitable Resident Evil 6"..

Takeuchi also said to 1up that he and Mikami see each other frequently and actually talk about RE related stuff.

So to say that Mikami has no influence with the RE franchise is not true. At least with the last game.

From the tone, though, they're talking about a gameplay reboot rather than a storyline one. It seems unlikely that we'll get Jill in a leather loincloth as a sex slave and Chris as a suave buisnessman being invited to Spencer's Mansion for an orgy and finding zombies instead any time too soon.

...must stop giving Capcom bad ideas...

I can live with a gameplay reboot, especially if it brings in more horror. Most likely, though, 're-invent' will be code for 'copying all the popular games' so not too likely to happen.

In terms of a reboot I think they should think about going more into open world gaming like Assassins Creed. A dark desolate city infested with a great amount of zombies would be great and if it could use the director mechanism of L4D would make it more intense with less scripted cheap scares. I know the new Tomb Raider is going open world I think RE should also

New VGA Image Puts Resident Evil Reveal In Doubt

The third and final in a series of images thought to be linked to an existing zombie franchise features a message scrawled at the bottom ot the page - "Murder your maker" - the exact same phrase which appeared on an Activision teaser site last week.

It also might be a teaser images for a Prototype 2.
And anyway, I don't really want any kind of return to Racoon City. The whole series decided to move on from the idea of a zombie infested city, simply because this idea overlived itself already. The Racoon City was perfect In Re2 and Re3, and none of the games ever made it better, so i think it should be left this way. But I don't want any series reboot as well.

I think going to zombies again is highly likely seeing as how zombies are the trend in games now (Dead NATION, Yakuza, Red Dead Redemption,etc.) RE made what zombies are in games now it'd make sense businesswise to go back to it and milk the cashcow
