Yes, Nicholai in the novel was the one who was responsible for injuring Mikael in an attempt to play "hunt the prey" with him a bit before killing him up close and personal. I absolutely love SD Perry's novelization of RE3. Nicholai's character in that was so delightfully written. In the games, he just a merc in it for the money--but Perry really made him into a memorable psychopathic killer. Not to mention fill in some of the story gaps in the game.

I hated SD Perry's novels. The characterisation was horrific. Plus, she really seems to have some fucked up fancy for rape.
