  • Interview on Operation Raccoon City & Revelations On Gamasutra

There is a new interview up on Gamasutra with producer Masachika Kawata and designer Kenji Matsuura about Operation Raccoon City and Revelations. The interview is rather interesting as it talks about the design aspect and the goal of the games as well as the series' direction.

Gamasutra - Two Tendrils Of Resident Evil's Evolution

    *UPDATE*
I hope I am not too late for this one:
Capcom is putting together a little gathering for you New Yorkers out there.

On Tuesday, October 11 from 7-11pm, the video game outfit is taking over Santos Party House (96 Lafayette St.) in New York City and letting attendees get a hands-on preview of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, Resident Evil: Revelations and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record.

The event is open to fans 18 and older. Due to limited space, early line-up is encouraged.

When you kind of go against expectations it can potentially make them wonder about the direction of the brand, but I can also see that point of view.

MK: Yeah. You can't please everyone, obviously, and there's been a lot of feedback from core fans, people who've played Resident Evil all their lives, since the PlayStation days, saying they want us to go even more towards the core, very deliberate pacing of those games.

On the other hand, there's been a lot of feedback saying, "We want to see an even more shooter and action-focused experience." And there's really no way to answer all of those requests in one game.
And the latter group are the cancer that is killing the series, the kind of cunt who watches the movies and thinks that action is always the best direction to take, the kind of person who sits on their arse and plays Call of Duty.
    See you in hell.

At the beginning, People had to adapt to Resident Evil's style. Now, Resident Evil adapts to people's tastes.

        "You Can't Please Everyone".

If they don't want to hear complaints, they should start making better games and maybe they will hear less bitching.Just sayin.

Capcom should have never crossed Shinji Mikami.

I don't think you understand the point of what you quoted given your reply.

Exactly. "You can't please anyone" is used to mean that you shouldn't just accommodate every Tom, Dick, and Harry when a few people complain. Using it to mean that they should change it based on complaints is ignoring the meaning (and whole point) of the phrase.
Revelations has a plot with twists everywhere. Way to go, Capcom, you successfully pulled off a mind-screw plotline.

Resident Evil 4 introduced more action and won Game of the year awards, huge sales and now appears on Best game ever lists from the media. Resident Evil 5 is the best selling in the series if I remember correctly.

I think it's a hell of a lot more then 10% if we like it or not.

Sadly, we're more likely the 10% who've been here from the beginning - the 90% are the casual gamers who like things going boom! and whiz! a lot. Which is fine. Just a shame Capcom's tiny brain can't manage both.

That right there is the inconvenient truth. We must all accept and come to terms with this.

Well, we could make Capcom see that doing both will allow them to be in both the action and horror markets, taking slices from two cakes and making there games different to the 99 other action games out that quarter...it just doesn't seem too likely.

I think you are forgetting Revelations and Operation Raccoon City, both a clear example of the series being splitted. Revelations is classic RE with new elements and ORC is straight action. I think this is the right direction, main titles go back to the roots and spin offs can be action-centered. Seems to me like the best of both worlds.

I live in NYC but the event seems boring if all they have to showcase are those two games.

It is possible to have a more even balance of survival horror and shooter, but It wouldn't be as profitable as RE5 so it wont happen.

To be fair, RE5 was riding on the success of RE4 to help push sales. Quite a smart move by Capcom when you think about it. Appeal to the action types with the promise of more RE4 gameplay, while at the same time luring in the more established fanbase with the use of fan favourites like Wesker, as well as the offer of providing closure to the series.
