  • Capcom-Unity Explain Why Classic RE Style is Not Returning

Apparently RE Revelations (or perhaps future titles that resemble Revs) is going to be the closest that RE classic purists are going to get from Capcom. Capcom-Unity's Sven suggested that classic RE style isn't going to return anymore because the current, broader market requires more handholding , and things like limited typewriter save wouldn't work anymore due to "issues of accessibility". Here's the exact quote:

This is probably a better question for Kawata or Kobayashi, however to throw in my $0.02, Revelations (or perhaps future titles that resemble Revs) is probably the closest RE classic purists are going to get.

We won't forget you guys though... but I can't tell you how or why yet.

That said, if you're looking for pre-rendered backgrounds and fixed camera angles, those are likely to not be present (I know you said dynamic above... just for others asking). The reality is that some of the things you're asking about (objective markers/directional aids, limited save/typewriter ribbons) are issues of accessibility. In today's market, the broader market really demands and requires a bit more handholding than the PS1 gamer of yore. These are generally expected user experience aids in this day and age and the lack of them usally results in negative feedback/lower reviews (and subsequently, lower sales).

In terms of more puzzley stuff, I think that Revelations strikes a really nice balance and I'm sure the feedback we've seen from fans and the media will be taken into account in future projects for what that's worth though.

    We can always improve.

This is why you give the option of whether or not to have them, or make harder difficulties more catering to the "classic" gamer.

I remember back during the PSone era how many people were constantly bitching about the RE controls. "It would be better without the fixed cameras", "it's too hard" or "it's not playable". I can't count how many times I've heard those complaints. They definitely aren't going to come back to this.

I'd go as far as to say that we (the fans) don't really want to see that again also. Only fans stuck in 1996 because of nostalgia want it back. The only thing many RE fans want is a game with modern controls AND the "feelings" from the old games. That's it.I don't think many people care about fixed cameras, ink ribbons or shit like this. We just want a RE game to be atmospheric and able to surprise/scare us. They really need to understand this.

This is just a nice way of Capcom saying that they want to cater to fans that couldn't even tell you what 2+2 is.

                So Sad.So Sad.

I wouldn't mind seeing Fixed Camera angle and Yes I would love to see the typewritters and save trunk return.

Capcom makes nothing but excuses all the time.Give the fans what they want.and stop bullshitting us.

Fucking people today can't spend more than five minutes to figure something out without crying that it is too hard or saying they don't have time to repeat the same thing over and over again.

                      Except they're doing exactly that.

It's time to face facts (actually, the time for that has long since passed, but some people apparently are too thickheaded to get the message): the fans who want things like fixed camera angles, typewriter saves, etc, are far, far fewer than the people who prefer the updated controls and interface.

This sense of entitlement that pervades the RE fan community is nauseating.

Really? You do remember that you're on an RE forum filled with people who have been with the series since the first game and want the series to at least get some of the classic elements back, but also that you're just being a snide elitist insulting people for wanting these elements back.

I'm not insulting people for wanting those elements back. There's a difference between wanting certain elements of a franchise to return and blaming a company for "not listening to the fans" when said fans make up only a fraction of the overall fanbase. People don't seem to realize that being with something from the very beginning doesn't mean squat, especially when dealing with a company that is, at the end of the day, a business. Catering only to a minority of the fanbase is not going to be financially viable. It's not enough to demand that Capcom make what the "real" fans want. It doesn't work like that, yet there are still people out there who apparently think that is the way of things. It gets incredibly tiresome seeing the same complaints over and over again when, really, these people should know better by now, or perhaps preferably, have moved on to other things.

Of course, it's not just the RE community that is like this. You see this kind of phenomenon with any fandom. The big difference is that RE fans should know what to expect by now and, yet, still act surprised when something like this happens. Heck, at least Capcom threw a bone to the fans with Lost in Nightmares and Revelations. And now zombies are even returning in RE6. You don't need fixed camera angles or limited typewriter saves to recreate a classic RE experience. But if that's all a classic RE experience is to you, then you should have abandoned this series long before now.

you make a good point i think revalasions was a happy medium at ther end of the day we all feel nostalgic for the old games but resi has to change to survive as long as they keep the fear elements and try to keep the new games scarey that's good enough for me hope everyone will get to like the new games in time

One thing I've been hoping for is for capcom to include a "classic mode" where you have to manually save, items don't sparkle, and there's no pop up instructions. Seems easy enough to me. Any thoughts on that? Maybe the typewriters are not as relevant anymore with today's era but they could be re-thought and used for some other reason.
