  • Unused, Unheard, and Alternate dialogue of Resident Evil 2

Just the other week, I was in a Resident Evil 2 mood, and I got into the whole RE2 "history" again (Hell, I just did a Claire A/Leon B run of Resident Evil 2 - N64 Version, that I'm gonna upload as well soon). So out of curiosity, I decided to check out the known early versions of the final Resident Evil 2 to explore if there were anything "beta"-ish in them. I first checked out the BIOHAZARD 2 Trial Disc, which was produced on 7/30/1997 according to the disc files (which was about 6 months before the game was released, mind you). My curiosity led me to discover some unused and unheard voice tracks from the final game!

Since, at first, I didn't find a topic about this on BioFlames, Google, YouTube or even here, I decided to make a video about this, and upload it on YouTube for all to see or in this case, hear.

    The video is here:

Inside the XA Voice Directory, the most interesting discoveries found inside the BIOHAZARD 2 Trial Disc, were the unknown screams and the unheard conversation between Leon and Marvin, the black police officer who gets killed off early in RE2 Final.

I figured that if I was gonna investigate the Trial Disc, I might as well search inside the BETA 2 Prototype too. However -- probably because of BETA 2 being produced closer to the game's final release date (BETA 2 = 10/31/1997; Final Japanese Release = 1/30/98) I didn't find dialogue that was as interesting as the Trial, expect some lines from Ada, and Leon. For the sake of content in the video, I added that unheard Ben (the reporter in the prison cell) line "Agh... son of a...".

And that was all I found, unfortunately. Not a lot of content, but at least it's something. I just learned that this particular content is featured at SurvivHor, the holy website for things RE pre-release. So it may be old news to some but damn it, I didn't know and no one mentioned it before =).

But there are some who are noobs when it comes to betas/pre-releases (like myself) and wouldn't know of this if it wasn't for your findings / re-post. Thanks OKei! I like the Marvin dialogue. - Oh believe me Marvs I WILL SHOOT YOU IN THE HEAD.

While a lot of RE websites have one or more beta section(s), there is no English RE website for betas only (Back in the days, The Right Game had a lot of beta content, but then started to move on more "mainstream" content like anyother RE website and died soon after). I always thought it was sad, because I would have love the competition
If I hang around THIA, it's because Dot50Cal is actualy the only English webmaster who keep trying to find some beta material

Awesome stuff! Do you happened to have the Resident Evil 2 voice in mp3 or anything?

For years I wanted to work on something akin to SurvivHor, but I kinda never said anything and gave up on the idea. Then once I more-or-less lost my own actual site hosting in 2002, never really thought about it again. I think the reason why I never went ahead is I just didn't have anything close to the resources and info you'd picked up over the years, and that was it. Ironically enough I guess it wasn't much long after that, you were talking about stopping updates on the site unless big stuff came up.

I plan on making a second episode for my documentary series called Shat-Canned Legends that will revolve around all of Resident Evil 2 from its 1.5 inception, which will be the heart of the documentary, to it's eventual release to it's influence on the RE franchise and Capcom in general too.

Shat-Canned Legends is a series of documentaries I’m making that discuss about canceled and massively-redesigned games, like EarthBound 64/MOTHER 3 (which I'm working on at the moment. Here are two previews), Sonic X-Treme, and Resident Evil 1.5. (The latter I’m hoping to work on as soon as possible after the EarthBound 64 episode is done.)

So you see I'm still occupied about Resident Evil for the moment. I hope to get started on it within this summer.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but has anyone any clue as to what this music track is used for at all? I've never heard of it before in Resident Evil 2.

This was discovered at Zophar's Domain.
