  • Resident Evil 4 Wii Pictures & Impressions

So I got my copy today, last one at Best Buy so I guess thats some good anecdotal evidence that the game is selling well. Anyway, My initial impressions thus far are well..Its Resident Evil 4. Ill admit that the shooting mechanic is better and more natural in this version, which is a plus. The fact that the cut scenes are done in real time is also a good change from the PS2 and PC versions.

Though the game has its faults. Some I've noticed center around the "automatic knife" the game allows you to do when you waggle the Wiimote. When done, the game locks Leon on to the nearest object and he attempts to attack it. I say attempts because even if you aren't close enough the game will still try to hit whatever it is you're trying to damage. Also the game seems to lag knife waggle input a bit, even after you stop waggling the knife will slash 1-2 more times which is a pain. Why couldn't they just map the knife to stop when you moving the Wiimote? It actually reads the waggles like a button press which then go into a queue.

While the lock on feature may sound like a good idea its not always the case, like when an enemy is near you and so are some boxes or a barrel or two, Leon will go after whatever it is thats closest which sometimes makes him do a complete 360, turning his back to the enemy. That may seem like a bad thing, but the game also lets you attack with the knife in the classic way so I suppose its not a huge deal. The game also supports the Classic Controller and I heard rumors that it also works with the Gamecube controller.

So far I'm enjoying the game, though the lack of bonus features unlocked from the start is a huge oversight by Capcom. All that is available from the Bonus option is the Umbrella Chronicles trailer. You cant even select alternate costumes from the beginning or start either of Ada's campaigns. Given the fact that the game is over two years old now and most gamers who wanted to play it have, Its a pretty big chore to make them go through the main campaign again just to access the extra features. Though I will say the true widescreen implementation is a huge plus.

Ill have more on the game soon, for now I'm encoding a video which should be done in a few hours. It should give you a good idea how the game looks in motion but for now you'll have to settle on shots of the box.

Ha, the knife problem reminds me of the same problem with Wesker in CV's Battle Game.

    To quote Thomas Wilde :

The biggest problem [Wesker] faces isn't that he's only got a knife. It's that he's dumb as a stump. You down? I'll expound.

    Problem One: Auto-Aiming

In CV, you can't turn it off, and the characters prioritize targets in the following manner:

    1) Explosive barrels.
    2) Everything else.

They will continue to hold these priorities regardless of whether it's a good idea or not. Wesker, for example, cannot detonate the barrels, since the dumb bastard doesn't have a gun; nevertheless, he will blithely turn his back on a horde of advancing zombies to threaten the nearest barrel with his knife. (The barrels, it should be noted, do not look impressed.) This can get you really, really killed, especially in the second room. As a general rule, if you want to do any serious knife-fighting, get the hell away from the barrels, or put them between you and the zombies so Wesker will at least be facing in the right general direction. Otherwise, Wesker will calmly sit there with his knife up and his back exposed, just waiting for a zombie to gnaw on him. Hence, my characterization of him as dumb as a stump. ("WESKER! You CANNOT blow up those BARRELS! Turn towards the ZOMBIES! You MORON!")

Lock-on has always managed to be more of a hindrance it prioritises it's threat assessment based on which enemy is nearest which isn't always the case. I always liked the optional lock on one button to raise the gun another to press while the gun is raised to lock on. Can't recall which RE games had that off hand, actually I'm sure CV did, I vaguely recall being able to shoot two zombies at once with the dual M-100P (?)

Seems weird to me that they'd give you what is essentially a more accurate and quicker way of aiming and then help you to aim it aswell

RE3 (PC version at least) had two auto-aiming buttons: auto-aim everything (barrels had the highest priority) and auto-aim enemies only. Also it had a button to quickly change target.
I dunno why they didn't implement this into Code Veronica and now RE4 Wii, because it was very useful.

What the hell? Did anyone notice the absence of the lady impaled to the wall by a pitchfork to the face in the last cabin before the entrance to town? Am I thinking of the wrong cabin?

I saw the gameplay, saw the head explode, and Leon almost got killed by the chainsaw-man. That's cool!
