So I got my copy today, last one at Best Buy so I guess thats some good anecdotal evidence that the game is selling well. Anyway, My initial impressions thus far are well..Its Resident Evil 4. Ill admit that the shooting mechanic is better and more natural in this version, which is a plus. The fact that the cut scenes are done in real time is also a good change from the PS2 and PC versions.
Though the game has its faults. Some I've noticed center around the "automatic knife" the game allows you to do when you waggle the Wiimote. When done, the game locks Leon on to the nearest object and he attempts to attack it. I say attempts because even if you aren't close enough the game will still try to hit whatever it is you're trying to damage. Also the game seems to lag knife waggle input a bit, even after you stop waggling the knife will slash 1-2 more times which is a pain. Why couldn't they just map the knife to stop when you moving the Wiimote? It actually reads the waggles like a button press which then go into a queue.
While the lock on feature may sound like a good idea its not always the case, like when an enemy is near you and so are some boxes or a barrel or two, Leon will go after whatever it is thats closest which sometimes makes him do a complete 360, turning his back to the enemy. That may seem like a bad thing, but the game also lets you attack with the knife in the classic way so I suppose its not a huge deal. The game also supports the Classic Controller and I heard rumors that it also works with the Gamecube controller.
So far I'm enjoying the game, though the lack of bonus features unlocked from the start is a huge oversight by Capcom. All that is available from the Bonus option is the Umbrella Chronicles trailer. You cant even select alternate costumes from the beginning or start either of Ada's campaigns. Given the fact that the game is over two years old now and most gamers who wanted to play it have, Its a pretty big chore to make them go through the main campaign again just to access the extra features. Though I will say the true widescreen implementation is a huge plus.
Ill have more on the game soon, for now I'm encoding a video which should be done in a few hours. It should give you a good idea how the game looks in motion but for now you'll have to settle on shots of the box.
